Welcome to BIOMED SIMULATION Knowledge Base

BACKGROUND:

The level sensor used in a Califia Patient Module reservoir measures fluid volume by sensing electrical capacitance inside the reservoir. The following instructions can be used to configure the level sensor.

  1. PREPARATION:
    1. Preparing Califia Patient Module (CPM) for level sensor configuration
      1. Connect the power cable and ethernet cable to CPM
      1. Connect circuit tubing (Arterial, Venous, Cardioplegia, and Vent)
      1. Power up the CPM
      1. Launch the Califia Simulator software; it should recognize the CPM
  2. CONFIGURATION:
    1. Level sensor teaching process
      1. In Opening Screen, select CPB and press the Continue button
      1. Press the Califia Controls button, in Fig 1

Figure 1. Califia Controls settings before level sensor teaching process

  1. Press the Open Valve button to disable level control, in Fig 1
    1. Set the Venous Valve slider to 100%, slider below in Fig 1
    1. Press the Calibration Panel button, in Fig 1

Figure 2. Calibration settings before level sensor teaching process

  • Set the Calibrate slider to Level, in Fig 2
    • Press the F11 key on the keyboard to bring up the level teach controls, see in Fig 2
    • Clamp the venous return and use a pump to fill Califia’s reservoir to the 700 mL mark
    • Once a volume is stable (not moving around), press the Low-Level Teach button, in Fig 3. The process takes about 20 seconds to complete. You will hear a series of audible clicks coming from the Califia Patient Module computer board. The indicator labeled Sensor (1L) should read around 0.40.

Note: if Sensor (1L) reads significantly different than 0.40, repeat this step to teach low level.

Figure 3. Level Teach buttons in Calibration section

  • Fill Califia’s reservoir to the 3.6 L mark
    • Once a volume is stable (not moving around), press the High-Level Teach button, in Fig 3. The process takes about 20 seconds to complete. A few audible click sounds are made. The indicator labeled Sensor (3L) should read between 3.50 and 3.65.

Note: if Sensor (3L) reads outside the specified range, repeat this step to teach high level.

  • Level sensor Calibration process
    • Empty the Califia reservoir to the 1 L mark
    • Once a volume is stable; press the checkmark box next to 1 Liter, in Fig 4
    • Fill the Califia reservoir to the 3 L mark
    • Once a volume is stable, press the checkmark box next to 3 Liters, in Fig 4, then press Apply button, in Fig 4
    • In the Califia Controls section, verify Level indicator reads 3 Liters; verify it reads properly at two other volume marks, say 2.5 L and 1.5 L.

Figure 4. Calibrate level

  • Press the Valve Opened button to enable level control
    • Test the Califia system by going on and off bypass to make sure the system responds as expected
